Beginners - "Sounds "  Introduction

Children in the "Sounds One" program learn to be aware of sounds in their environment and how to manage them with adult guidance. Transitioning from objects to pictures is a key learning point for both children and adults involved.

Key strategies learned in this program include:

  • "Trail-error" to manage learning with the child
  • "Wait" to listen long enough for verbal directions
  • "Describe" to identify the child's needs and learning styles

In this program, children also develop:

  • Language skills to describe sounds without avoidance
  • Phonemic awareness skills in a simple way to familiarize adults before direct work

The program aims to train the ear to hear new sounds and involves sets of 10 sounds each, ultimately totaling 30 sounds the child becomes familiar with. Children are taught to organize materials and match objects to pictures, which then progresses to working only with pictures. The program emphasizes top-to-bottom and left-to-right sequencing for reading and writing precursor skills.

During the program, strategies such as trial and error help children learn through exploration. It also addresses avoidance behaviors by teaching children to verbalize their needs rather than covering their ears or turning away.

Additional concepts introduced in the program include:

  • Teaching children to wait and listen for directions
  • Using reinforcers such as colors and shapes to enhance learning
  • Incorporating other skills like articulation and phonemic awareness

The program encourages close observation of children's behaviors and responses to tailor guidance effectively and ensure comprehension and engagement.
